I wish to share with you the following two segments of the Bible:
1) “For you are a slave to whatever controls you. And when people escape from the wicked ways of the world by learning about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up with sin and become its slave again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the right way to live than to know it and then reject the holy commandments that were given to them. They make these proverbs come true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit,’ and ‘A washed pig returns to the mud.’” (2 Peter 2:19-22 NLT)
2) “For it is impossible to restore to repentance those who were once enlightened – those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come – and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people to repentance again because they are nailing the Son of God to the cross again by rejecting him, holding him up to public shame.
When the ground soaks up the rain that falls on it and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has the blessing of God. But if a field bears thistles and thorns, it is useless. The farmer will condemn that field and burn it. (Hebrews 6:4-8 NLT)
The first topic Jesus preached (when He was a man) was Repentance. (Matthew 4:17) At the end of the Bible, the Resurrected Jesus instructed John to write seven letters to seven different churches (Revelation 2 and 3). Six letters out of the total seven were warnings given to the church members emphasizing the importance to repent. Most, if not all of the church members had already been baptized (or being born again). Therefore, repentance is neither restricted to non-believers only nor it was intended for a one time action. It applies to all believers of Christ in each minute of their life regardless whether they had already been born again or not. Every true believer of Christ should be prepared well throughout his/her life as no one knows when he/she will leave this world (die) or the exact moment of Jesus Second Coming.
Satan (the Devil) does continue to send his temptations and ambiguous ideas to anyone he thinks fit. He does pay extra attention and effort in order to conquer those who prefer to go closer to God. Prudent believers of Christ should take “Daily Bread from Heaven” (read the Words of Jesus every day – see John 6:48-59, 1:1-3 and 6:63) and always ask the Holy Spirit to stay inside their hearts. For an empty heart (not occupied by the Holy Spirit) is extremely vulnerable towards the invasion of Satan (Matthew 12:43-45)
In Chapter 25 of Matthew, Jesus taught His disciples many examples as how His believers should ACT in order to go to heaven. Presume all the disciples of Jesus had already been born again and most of them had faith; if good deeds and repentance are not important criteria for entering into heaven, why should Jesus repeatedly telling them to repent?
In a more serious statement made by Jesus:
“Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to me as ‘Lord’, but they still won’t enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The decisive issue is whether they obey my father in heaven. On judgment day many will tell me, ‘Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never know you. Go away; the things you did were unauthorized.’” (Matthew 7:21-23 NLT)
No wonder James (the brother of Jesus) warned: “Just as the body is dead without a spirit, so also faith is dead without good deeds.” (James 2:26 NLT)
“On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and you, sealed by the shedding of my blood. Do this in remembrance of me AS OFTEN AS YOU DRINK IT.’ For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
So if anyone eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily, that person is guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of the Lord. That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking from the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup unworthily, not honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.” (1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 29 NLT)
From the above statement, it is very clear that “Repentance” is not a one-time action.
